- Positioning miles. Getting an available vehicle from wherever it finished its last job to your pickup point.
- Loaded miles. The actual transit from pickup to delivery.
- Wait time. Time the driver spends at either end beyond a short free window, whether the freight is not ready or the dock is backed up.
- Return exposure. The vehicle ends the day wherever the delivery was. If that is a market with no return freight, the rate covers that.
None of these are surcharges added on top. They are the job.
How does deadhead mileage change the rate?
Deadhead is any mile the vehicle runs empty, and on a same-day move it appears at both ends. A run from Tampa to Naples that finds no backhaul means the driver returns empty for the entire distance.
This is why two shipments of identical weight over identical distance can quote differently. A delivery into a dense freight market has a reasonable chance of a return load. A delivery into a rural destination does not, and the rate reflects a round trip rather than a one-way move.

Same-day pricing is driven by which vehicle the freight requires, not by the pound. A shipment that fits a cargo van prices in one tier. The moment it needs a sprinter, a box truck, or a straight truck with a liftgate, it moves into a different tier with a smaller pool of available vehicles.

Urgency itself is priced. A vehicle held on standby for immediate dispatch is a vehicle not earning revenue elsewhere, which is what emergency shipping rates cover. Where the timeline allows a few hours of flexibility, expedited freight on a scheduled dedicated run typically prices below a true immediate dispatch.
For long-distance moves where ground transit cannot meet the deadline at any price, air freight becomes the comparison rather than a more expensive truck.
How do you keep a same-day quote from moving?
Rate changes between quote and invoice almost always trace to information that changed, not to pricing that shifted. Give dispatch accurate details up front and the quote holds.
The details that move a rate most: understated dimensions that force a larger vehicle, freight that is not staged when the driver arrives, a liftgate or inside delivery discovered at the destination, and approval delays that push the run into after-hours territory.
