A shipment moves exactly as booked, the carrier picks it up on schedule, and delivery happens without a hitch. Then the invoice arrives with an extra line: a reclassification fee. Nothing about the shipment changed after pickup, but the number on the bill did.

Freight classification is one of the least understood parts of LTL shipping, and it is also one of the most expensive to get wrong. It starts with the same document responsible for most freight billing disputes, the bill of lading, and the common mistakes shippers make on that form are often the same mistakes that trigger a reclass. The industry standard that governs how freight is classified, the National Motor Freight Classification, is maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association and used by essentially every LTL carrier in the country.

Here is what freight class actually is, how NMFC codes work, and how to keep a classification mistake from turning into a billing dispute.

What Freight Class Actually Is

Freight class is a standardized rating system used across the LTL industry to determine how much it costs a carrier to transport a given shipment. It is not based on what the product is worth or how far it is traveling. It is based on how the freight behaves on a truck.

Four factors determine class:

  • Density. How much the shipment weighs relative to the space it occupies. Low-density freight (bulky, lightweight items) generally carries a higher class and costs more to ship per pound than dense, compact freight.
  • Stowability. Whether the freight can be loaded efficiently alongside other shipments, or whether its shape, weight, or hazard status limits how a carrier can pack the trailer.
  • Handling. Whether the freight requires special equipment, extra labor, or careful handling due to fragility, shape, or size.
  • Liability. The shipment’s susceptibility to damage, theft, or the risk it poses to other freight on the same trailer.

Together, these four factors produce a class rating between 50 and 500. Lower numbers mean denser, easier-to-handle freight and lower shipping costs. Higher numbers mean the opposite.

What NMFC Codes Are

The NMFC assigns a specific code to thousands of commodity types, and each code maps to a freight class based on the four factors above. It functions as the reference standard the entire LTL industry uses to price shipments consistently.

When freight is booked, the shipper (or their broker) provides an NMFC code and commodity description on the bill of lading. That code tells the carrier what class to bill against.

How Carriers Verify Class

Carriers do not simply take a shipper’s word for it. Freight is subject to inspection at origin terminals, and increasingly, through automated systems.

  • Physical inspections. Terminal staff visually inspect and sometimes reweigh or re-measure shipments to confirm the declared class matches the actual freight.
  • Density-based scanning. Many carriers now use dimensioning technology at the dock that automatically calculates density and flags shipments where the booked class does not match the measured freight.
  • Audit review. Even after delivery, freight bills can be pulled for audit, particularly on high-volume shipping lanes or accounts with a history of classification issues.

Any of these can trigger a reclassification, and the shipper is billed the difference between the original rate and the corrected one, usually without warning until the invoice shows up.

Common Classification Mistakes

Most classification errors are not intentional. They come from a handful of recurring habits:

  • Using outdated NMFC codes. The NMFC schedule is updated periodically, and codes tied to specific commodities can be revised or retired.
  • Estimating density instead of measuring it. A shipment’s actual dimensions and weight determine density. Guessing at either number is one of the most common sources of reclass fees.
  • Vague freight descriptions. A description like “machine parts” gives a carrier little to verify against. Specific, accurate commodity descriptions reduce the odds of a dispute.
  • Reusing a class from a similar past shipment. Freight that looks similar is not always classed the same way. Packaging changes, weight changes, or even a different pallet configuration can shift the calculation.
  • Not accounting for freight class exceptions. Some commodities have NMFC exceptions or multiple class tiers based on density ranges, and defaulting to a single class across all shipments of that commodity leads to consistent under-billing followed by consistent reclass fees.

How to Avoid Reclass Fees and Disputes

  • Measure, do not estimate. Confirm actual weight and dimensions before booking, every time, even for freight that ships regularly.
  • Keep NMFC codes current. Verify the code against the current schedule rather than relying on a code used previously.
  • Write specific freight descriptions. Detail matters more than brevity on a BOL.
  • Work with a partner who checks classification before it becomes a problem. A broker or 3PL that reviews freight details prior to dispatch catches errors before they become fees.

Reclassification is closely related to the accessorial charges that can add unexpected costs to a freight bill, and it plays directly into the LTL vs. FTL decision, since classification accuracy matters far more on LTL shipments than full truckload.

Getting freight class right the first time is one of the simplest ways to keep a freight budget predictable. When it goes wrong, it rarely goes wrong quietly.
